New Council, Same Fight

Last night the new town council was sworn in during a special town council meeting. Details can be seen on FM TV for those that did not attend.

Now that the election is behind us and we are tabulating the results as far as the logistics of the vote. We will post that part of the results as soon as we can. We hope to demonstrate the effect of the Morriss Corridor as far as voter turn out.

One thing we want the town to know and for all of our supporters and those who don't, that we are NOT going away.

In last fridays edition of "The Dallas Morning News" Metro section, reporter Wendy Hundley wrote, "Plan to widen road to 6 lanes forges split in Flower Mound". We would like to thank Ms. Hundley for the story and information that was reported to the entire Metroplex.

Michael Ryan, the town's director of community affairs said, "This is a quality of life issue, its about improving local trips as well as regional commutes, and allowing residents to spend less time in their cars and more time at home with their families." Town officials say the growth of the southern Denton County community requires roadway expansion to avoid traffic gridlock and congestion.

Quality of Life? Has that not been our call for the last 3 months? Quality of Life, I googled that phrase to find a definition, there isn't one. What does quality of life mean to you?
For me? related to the effects of my "quality if life" living 2 doors from a 6 lane major thoroughfare, does not constitute very much quality at all. I see it as a decrease in my quality of life. More pollution? More Noise? More anxiety knowing that I have to cross 3 lanes of oncoming traffic and hoping I can safely merge into the other 3 lanes in order to get to work? More cement? Less tree and grass? Less feel of a real community? Having to have to live with all that severely diminishes my "quality of life". The extra 45 seconds I might have to spend in my car every day because I'm only driving on a 4 lane road as opposed to a 6 lane major arterial roadway, doesn't even cause a blip in my scheme of life.

So Town Officials, Town Council Members, who's quality of life are you more concerned for? Residents of Highland Village? Developers of the Riverwalk? Please answer that question. The town would not receive a black mark on its record if we chose to return the unused money after we improve the intersection at 1171, construct the international parkway flyover, make other improvements without total expansion. Think how much better your "quality of life" will be when you go to sleep knowing you did the right thing for the community. Do the right thing and wait till the time is right.

  1. All,

The Town thinks we are defeated, and now that the election has come and gone they think we will go away without a fight. Behind closed doors they are already plotting and planning their next moves, and figuring out how to design and build the road. They have officially proven that they couldn't care less about what we the people think.

This movement needs to get bigger and stronger over the next year if we are to defeat this needless and unwanted project. So with that in mind, I have a few suggestions:

    Don't give up!

    Don't sit by idly!

    Don’t lower your voice!

Don’t stop talking to your neighbors and friends!

    Don’t stop reading this blog!

Don’t stop coming to the meetings at Town Hall!

Don’t stop coming to StopMorriss6 events!

    Don’t stop caring!

    Don’t stop being passionate!

    Don’t lay down!

    Don’t lower your head!

    Don’t stop e-mailing!

    Don’t stop handing out literature!

Don’t take down your StopMorriss6 signs!

    Instead:

Do raise you voice even louder than before!

Do join together in peaceful protests!

Do get even more of your friends and neighbors involved!

Do show up in record numbers to Town Hall on May 26th!

Do put out even more yard and wall signs!

Do attend more meetings with your neighbors and friends!

Do increase the size of your e-mail distribution list!

Do post more on the blog and Facebook page.

Do put a StopMorriss6 sticker on your car to show your displeasure with the Town!

Do contribute more of your time and some money to the fight!

Do get back out with your petition and get more people to sign it!

Do get mad that your leaders aren’t listening to you!

Do show everyone that wants to take notice, that the people of Flower Mound have a voice and aren’t afraid to use it!

Do apply for positions on the P&Z and other committees and boards!

    DO TAKE YOUR TOWN BACK!!!!!!!

    Bob

  2. Interesting thread from a Flower Mound forum regarding Stop Morriss 6: http://lantanalinks.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3763

  3. Bob: What exactly is going on behind closed doors? The Town has the funding agreement and the Transportation meeting on the 26th to appease people, after that this is a done deal. We already know how the council will vote, they have said/shown that.

  4. Kim,

Can you please post the transcripts of what Mr. Dixon, Mr. Wallace and Mr. Hayden said about expanding Morriss Rd. at the March on Morriss Forum?

After that's been posted we can discuss how our new Town Council should vote. We need to hold them to their words and expose them if they differentiate from them.

    Thanks.

  5. Scott is working on the transcripts of the video. He wants to make sure it correct.

  6. That should be easy for Council Member Wallace, he said all along he would vote "yes". As far as Council Member Dixon, I would bet his vote will be "yes" as well. Council Member Hayden, honestly, I always thought he was telling people what they wanted to hear and would not be surprised if he voted for the project as well.

  7. Im glad you are here to speak for them.

  8. You obviously were'nt at the forum in the park.

  9. Wait for the transcript. Mr. Wallace added a few caveats that would prevent him from voting for the widening. I believe Mr. Dixon said he saw no reason for it and we should wait. Let’s see what the actual words were and then we can remind them of what they said.

  10. There will be only one no vote when the time comes and it will come from Mr. Hayden. There was a two-three vote already in the first meeting and one of the no votes come from him.

    The road will happen.

Stay strong and vocal to make as much difference as you can.

  11. How many people will show up at Town Hall on June 15th to voice their opposition? Even if it is 500, that is ONLY 1% of the entire population. The Town Council represnts ALL 65,000 residents, not just a vocal 1%. Once the new Council has been briefed with information they did not have before the election, it will probably be a unanymous vote. It is easy to make campaign promises, but the hazard is the candidates don't have the full scoop before the election.
The late Doc Wilkerson, our second mayor, and for whom the park next to Forestwood is named, had one focus since the town was chartered in 1961. It was ROADS,ROADS,ROADS. Thanks to him we have FM 1171, FM 3040, FM 2499 which were orginally cow paths. He very effectively worked with TXDOT. There was a vision 28 years ago, when Morris was built that it would be 6 lands as attested to the 6 lanes on the bridge over Timbercreek. The section of Morris Rd. from 407 to 1171 was built with Town bond $$$. The section from 1171 to 3040 was built later by a developer who went bankrupt after the road was completed. It was also planned to be 6 lanes.

Since I moved here, I also have opposed issues which went through anyway. What I was able to do, was affect the total impact and changes were made.

Everyone one moved to Flower Mound because they liked it here. Just because this is not going the way you would like, please do not move, but instead, become involved and join those of us who consider ourselves modern day pioneers.
