Forrestwood Middle school

This morning we passed out information sheets to parents exiting Forrestwood after dropping off their children. The reception was fantastic from the school officials, Crossing Guards and all the motorists exiting the school. Almost all the feedback we recieved was positive and the message is clear, Everyone is concerned about safety and the increased risk created by widening the road. We will continue today to distribute the information sheet neighborhoods

Due to a typo on the sheets we passed out yesterday, The incorrect blogspot was listed. We apologize for the error and will correct it immediately.

Your flyers are detracting from the look of my property. Please discontinue adding to our front door pollution.

  3. I complained and this is the canned response I received.

Thank you for your comments. On behalf of Mayor Smith, the Town Council, and Town Staff, I am pasting a Fact Sheet about the future construction on Morriss/Gerault. There is contact information for the appropriate staff member at the end of the Fact Sheet, if you desire additional information.

    • The 1981 Master Thoroughfare Plan, which is a component of the Town’s Master Plan, indicated that Morriss/Gerault should be a Major Arterial, or 6-lane divided roadway. The Master Thoroughfare Plan was adopted again in 2000, 2004, and most recently in 2009, with no changes to the designation of Morriss and Gerault as Major Arterials. As mentioned above, this roadway has been planned as a 6-lane divided roadway for at least 27 years.

    • Consideration and adoption of all of the Master Thoroughfare Plans involved opportunities for public input and comment. The result of these plans will be to provide alternate routes to FM 2499 for residents of Flower Mound that commute to the south in the morning and north in the evening.

    • Due to the foresight of the Town during previous planning efforts, the additional two lanes can be constructed within the existing median.

    • Additional opportunity for public input was provided during the annual budget adoption process. The Town’s budget includes the Capital Improvement Program budget, which forecasts all Town-implemented projects for the next five years and beyond. During the last budget process, the widening of Morriss and Gerault was approved, with design to occur during this fiscal year and construction to begin in the following fiscal year, or as soon as design is complete.

    • The expansion of Morriss/Gerault was also included in the Denton County Roadway bond election held in November 2008, affording additional opportunity for public input. Denton County Commissioners Andy Eads and Bobbie Mitchell provided additional details to the public at the October 20, 2008, Town Council meeting outlining the roads contained within the bond program, including Morriss/Gerault. The Denton County Roadway bond program was subsequently approved by Denton County voters on November 4, 2008.

    • Plans to expand Morriss/Gerault are proceeding in conjunction with The Riverwalk at Central Park project. The Transportation Impact Analysis (TIA) for the Riverwalk at Central Park project indicated that the Level of Service on Morriss/Gerault would be negatively impacted once this project was constructed. As a condition of the approval of this monumental project, the developer was required to contribute toward the expansion of the roadway in order to meet the recommendations from the TIA. This project, and the related TIA and Thoroughfare Plan, were also discussed at numerous Planning and Zoning, Town Council, and Transportation Commission meetings in 2008.

    • Funding for this project is being provided from three sources. The first source is Denton County roadway bond funding, mentioned above. The second source of funding is revenue from the SH 121 Tollway project, and the final source of funding is by the developer of The Riverwalk at Central Park. No Town-initiated funding obligations have been utilized for this project.

    • Morriss Road is not a residential street and has been a 4-lane arterial, with a wide median to accommodate two additional lanes, for many years. Gerault was widened to a 4-lane divided arterial, with a wide median to accommodate an additional two lanes, in the late 1990s. As evidenced, this roadway has been planned and constructed to accommodate widening to a full Major Arterial cross section.

  4. The following was taken from the Town of Flower Mound website:

"Morriss Road STEP Grant Median Beautification Project -The Town and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) have begun a median beautification project on Morriss Road from FM 407 to FM 2499. The final phase of the project is the construction of a “Welcome to Flower Mound” entrance monument that will be constructed on International Parkway at the Town limits. The work is scheduled to be completed by end of March 2009."

My obvious question is this: if city leaders knew that they were going to expand Morriss to 6 lanes by removing the median, why did they approve the above renovations to the median? Seems like a complete waste of taxpayer dollars to add trees, bushes, grass and a sprinkler system to a median that will be destroyed in the near future.

We will also have packages ready for each sub-division to start distributing in their respective neighborhood. If you cannot make the meeting, then contact us via stopmorriss6@googlemail.com
