First, I would like to thank everyone that came out to support our cause and take a lot of time out of your busy schedules to make tonight a huge success. Over 130 people were in attendance, counting the boy scouts and other locals involved in the business of the evening. Twenty nine people signed up to speak and most used their allotted time, if not more, in very passionate and sometimes emotional speeches. We made a tremendous impact and received raves from reporters and City officials for our professionalism and keeping on point as far as our message.
I would also like to thank Mayor Smith, the 5 council members and all the city staff in attendance for making us feel comfortable and listening to us patiently.
The result of the meeting was the Council and the Mayor sent the Morriss Rd project to the Transportation Committee for study and public hearings starting as soon as May, instead of not being heard by Council again until August. Workshops will begin soon with us involved very soon and we will be involved directly with the Committee from this point on.
Thanks again, and be assured our goal is still to StopMorriss6!

Thank you for all of your work on this project and congrats on the success tonight in getting our concerns heard.
ReplyDeleteYes, thanks for all of the work you guys are putting into this. You are an asset to our great town.
ReplyDeleteI'm posting this here in case you didn't see my response to Corey in the "The Agenda" thread.
ReplyDeleteI was at the meeting and I listened to every speaker, I told you it would be a one sided conversation and it was. Mr. Tasker had to lecture us as to the 31 times the issue was on the agenda over the last 14 months, and he was right, we didn’t know. However what we did was an awesome display of we can accomplish when we all come together. After the speeches were over I stood outside and talked to the folks as they left. They were pumped up and even more confident that our movement will take hold. This current council is done, they will approve the bars staying open until 2:00am in Flower Mound and that will be their last major decision. So with that said, we need to look at the three spots that are going to filled. In Place 3, Mike Wallace publically said he is 100% for the expansion of Morriss Rd. Claudio Forest is up in the air about it, here is what they both said:
Wallace: I support widening of Morriss, and the reason is because we have a traffic problem. We have too much demand for the supply of the capacity to meet the demand. And, I’ll tell you where it’s coming from. It’s coming from the DFW Connector, one of the largest projects in TxDOT’s history. We also have the extension of 2499 up through I-35E. We also have the River Walk at Central Park, which will have a 100-bed hospital, 1,200 residential units, retail, office, hotel and hopefully a Market Street. And finally, we have additional growth and development in surrounding communities.”
Forest: “When we first moved here, 2499 wasn’t six lanes, 3040 was a two-lane road, and the improvements were a welcome need for the growth of the town. Morriss Road … I drive it every day, and the congestion isn’t as great to be what I consider it to be on 3040 or 2499. But, because we have a large development coming to town in the River Walk, the city needs to look at that development, and after 2499 is finished and 1171 and all other improvements in The River Walk start to go in, that’s when we need to get input from everyone.”
I am against the project as you all know and here is what I said:
Butler: “I’m against it. I drive it every single day, and I’ve never been in a traffic jam on Morriss Road before. Building the River Walk is a five-six-year project, and when 2499 gets done, a lot of people from Highland Village will stop coming through Morriss Road. Once construction on 407 and 2499 is done, let’s see how it is then. I’ve heard estimates of in five or 10 years there will be 25,000 cars on Morriss Road. Where’s that coming from?”
Tom Hayden has cleared up his position recently and now says he will vote against it if elected. In place 1, I think both of the Steves will vote for it, here is what they said last week:
Lyda: “The key issue is that there is a group of residents who didn’t get the chance to speak about this, and that’s what makes me sick. We need to have better contact so that residents will know what’s going on. There are many things in town that are causing us to have to build this. One is traffic congestion, and the other is the River Walk being constructed at the top of Morriss Road. I don’t think the road should be built until developing starts up at the River Walk.”
Dixon: “I drive Gerault/Morriss almost every day. And I understand when people say we don’t need to widen Morriss. I never see what I consider a traffic jam on Morriss or Gerault. It does get a little hectic, especially at FM 1171 going north. When this does get to town council, I want to make sure the citizens have a voice, and I want to be that voice. I want to listen to those concerns.”
In Place 5, Angie Cox seems to be in favor of all road expansion saying this:
Cox: “The No. 1 issue in our town is transportation. We need to make sure we can get in and out of Flower Mound in a timely manner, and not sit in traffic so that we can get home to our families and on to our activities that we like to do. It’s important that we continue to work with TxDOT and Denton County to ensure that these roads get complete in a timely manner.”
While Rick Cleland actually answered the question like me:
Cleland: “Stop the widening of Morriss Road. Parts of it I can see down the road, maybe on the southern end, could use some attention. But the section between 3040 and 1171 … to tear up that median for concrete is just unacceptable to me.”
Bottom line is, if you are passionate about this issue, vote for the people that will support your cause!

Good Luck, I hope you have better luck with FM then we had with Highland Village and trying to stop 2499 sec.4 . I hope Flower Mounds elected officials arent as deaf and greedy as our council members. Most of all I hope you gather the sympathy and support that nobody gave to us.
