  1. In my FM Newsletter this morning I saw that Denton County is cancelling all community events; does this apply to the march tonight as well? In my own opinion, I care about the issues but it isn't worth risking my health over. Have fun if ya'll still do it and I will look for a recap on here.

  2. several bloggers have asked where they could get unbiased facts about morriss road.

Is it possible to post links to the town’s fact sheet, frequently asked questions and transportation commission video to the front page of this blog?

The documents and video contain alot of factual information that will answer a lot of the questions that are being asked, and will clear up some of the misinformation about Morris road and help us all take an informed position.

If the creators of this blog really are interested in presenting both sides, there should be no problem in providing their visitors and readers with access to this information. All of this information is available at http://www.flower-mound.com/morriss.

  3. To Anonymous #1 - Yes, we are monitoring the situation regarding Swine Flu very carefully. What you are referring to is a communication issued by the Denton County Health Department recommending to cancel or postpone community events. We talke this communication from our county health department very seriously.

At this time, we do still plan to host tonight's candidate forum. Being a fresh-air venue with no food preparation or closed ventalation, this is the best possible venue. To date, there are no confirmed or suspected cases of swine flu in our community and all schools are open.

We do encourage anyone who is sick with flu-like symptoms to stay home. We will post a summary (and hopefully a transcript or video if possible) for those who cannot attend. Several local TV stations may be providing coverage and the local papers will also be covering. And we encourage everyone to follow the CDC's advice to take sensible steps: wash your hands frequently, use hand sanitizers, and cover your mouth if you cough or sneeze.

We will be reviewing the latest information from our government health advisors this afternoon. If a cancellation is neccessary, we will post it on this blog. But at this time, tonight's candidate forum is still on!

  4. To Anonymous #2, thank you for reminding everyone to keep checking with the Town's website. I think they are continuing to append to their FAQ document.

This blog was created to establish a voice separate from the "conventional wisdom" the Town is disseminating. We should have a dialog about the information the Town is posting and what we are saying on this blog (the Transportation Commission's Public Forum next month is a great start).

For example, the Town has posted a really slick video of the DFW Connector and it looks great. But did you know that that video is 1 of 3 possible options for the DFW Connector project? It shows the most expensive option assuming they get the funding they want. There are 2 other less costly options that they could end up constructing. I personally don't know all of the details, so I am hesitant to go into too much detail here. But this is the type of information we want to bring to the surface.

I personally disagree with the conclusions the Town is making in their FAQ and I also challenge some of the facts. Clearly, the Town's staff (being engineers and planners chartered to make a road project happen) are biased in favor of the project. And I am probably biased in disfavor of the project.

The Transportation Commission's Public Forum next month will be a great opportunity to discuss these things. While I expect there to be more discussion there about "how to" do the project than "if we should" do the project. But I still welcome the outreach the Town is trying to make and I think it will be productive.

Please join your neighbors at the Transportation Commission's Public Forum on May 26th. This is advertised on the Town's website on the front page (http://www.flower-mound.com).

  5. I would like to respond to the first Anonymous post. I too care about the issues and want to hear what the Candidates have to say along with keeping everyone safe and healthy. I also have to wonder if the current Town Council is really genuine in keeping its residents safe. Are they going to postpone the elections for the duration of the swine flu threat? I feel safer standing in the open not touching anyone listening to a crowd then going into a closed election box touching everything everyone else has. Do you think the town will give us masks when we walk into the public buildings to vote and hand us germ-x and Lysol wipes for in-between each voter.
Town Hall has more people going into its buildings then kids at the park. Again, I pray for everyone’s good health and safety with common sense.
PS If you are sick then stay home!!!

  6. Give me a break. The Town Council has not cancelled or postponed anything. The communication mentioned by Anonymous #1 was issued by the Denton County Health Department. The knee-jerk reaction to blame the Town Council for everything and calling into question their sincerity regarding public safety is not constructive. It only exposes the anonymous poster as a malcontent who is looking to bash the Council at any opportunity.

  7. I am so sick of people implying that the council is "out to get us and do us wrong." Do you get that these are real people and they are giving of their time freely and without compensation. It amazes me that with all they have to put up with from people like you that anybody would want to serve, they are better people than I am. Before you degrade someone, keep in mind that these are people that have families; ask yourself how your wife/husband/kids would like to hear the rude comments made about their loved ones. I happen to know the wife of one of the candidates and the things that have been said to her and about her husband are awful. All they have ever wanted to do is serve their community and have spent the last 4 years doing just that. I will get off my soap box, but I hope everyone takes my words to heart.

  8. Everyone should act as if they are speaking in front of their children and setting a good example. We can all have spirited debates about the issues, but everyone should mind their manners.

  9. http://dentoncounty.com/dept/health/PDFs/Community-Health-Advisory-Swine%20Flu.pdf

    Community Health Advisory:
Swine Influenza: Community and Group Gatherings
Due to the current national swine influenza threat and the current level of activity in the
DFW metroplex, it is the recommendation of the Denton County Health Authority
through the Denton County Health Department that all community or group events be
canceled or postponed for the duration of the swine flu threat.
Although currently there are no confirmed cases of swine flu in Denton County, we are
aware of potential exposures to probable cases. It is likely that swine flu is currently
incubating in Denton County communities and may produce large numbers of ill
persons in our county. Large community gatherings or group events would provide an
unfortunate opportunity for the spread of this potentially fatal disease.
Recommendations to reduce the spread of infections, such as swine flu, include:
    • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
    • Stay home when you are sick.
    • Cover your mouth and nose to reduce the spread of germs.
    • Wash hands thoroughly and often.
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
    • Avoid large gathering.
For additional recommendations, please contact the Denton County Swine Flu hotline at
940-349-2584 or the Texas Department of State Health Services Swine Flu hotline at
    888-777-5320.

  10. So the march/forum is being postponed or cancelled?

    ReplyDelete
  11. I am still going because the blog said they would post an official cancellation not one by an anonymous poster.
